Be Thou At Peace

Posted by HARRIS DIANA B on January 1, 2013:

Our father was honest, honorable, and intelligent. He loved his country and honored its flag.

His Army career, which began at West Point, was diverse and gratifying. Less enjoyable assignments were by far the exception to the rule. Highlights for all of us included Panama (where he met our mother), Guam, Aberdeen Proving Ground, MAAG UK in London, Black Hills Army Depot, South Dakota, and Jefferson Proving Ground, Indiana.

He was devoted to his family, especially his wife of nearly fifty years. His family loyalty encompassed, in addition to Shirley and his four daughters, his parents, aunts, uncles, siblings, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and 'surrogate daughters' Sigi , Suse, and Marion, who became family members during our stay in England.

He had a life-long reverence for West Point. His career began here. His wife - our mother - is buried here, as are other family members. Laying him to rest here brings the circle to an appropriate close.

He modeled a strong work ethic for his daughters and encouraged us to stand on our own. He provided each of us with the education we sought. Speaking for myself, he inspired a love of music, literature, and gardening that has enriched my life immeasurably. He even managed to instill what seems to be a genetic predisposition for logistics management that has been the basis of my career.

He loved each of us very much. We will miss him.
