David Dewey Detar, Jr.
Born April 14, 1929 -- Died May 6, 2013
David Dewey Detar Jr. was born in Pottstown, Pennsylvania on 14 April 1929 and was appointed to West Point from his Congressional District.
His West Point classmates recall: "Dewey came to West Point from high school to play football, but a new injury greatly limited him in sports. He has, however, made a name for himself in other fields. One of the largest men at the Academy, he was known throughout the Corps as a prankster without equal. A friend of everyone, he can look back upon his days at the Academy and realize that those four long, hard years were well worth the effort."
During his cadet days Dewey went out for Football plebe, yearling and cow years; for Wrestling plebe year; and was a Cadet Sergeant his first class year.
Upon graduation Dewey was found physically disabled and was not commissioned; although he did receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering.
In 1961 Dewey accepted a position with Firestone Tire & Rubber Company and in 1981 went with Teleflex Inc. where he served until 1990 when he went with North West Controls, Inc. Dewey retired in 1993 and made his home in Pottstown, Pennsylvania with his wife Kitty.
