Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Bob Orr on September 26, 2013:

Classmates,

I attended Dan's funeral service this afternoon. The service was well attended in a spacious, elegantly modern chapel. Dan's coffin was draped with an American flag.

Charles Manning performed the prelude, interlude and postlude at the grand piano with glorious sounds that allowed those of us in attendance to reflect upon the life of Dan FitzGibbon and how he impacted others by his presence. [Manning is a frequent organ soloist with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra].

Services were presided over by the Reverend Doctor Linda McCoy. The service consisted primarily of testimonials. A lawyer colleague described Dan's impact on the legal community both locally and internationally. A second attorney spoke of a 40 year friendship, related numerous anecdotes and lifted the spirits of those in attendance. Then, a former Lawrence Township school board member described how Dan mentored her when he served as the President of that school board. All three made occasional references to his book "To Bear Any Burden." After this, Dr. McCoy read a statement written by Dan's two children. At the conclusion of their reflection, they quoted my message to the family that referenced the first four lines of the last verse of the Alma Mater. As the flag-draped casket was wheeled past, I rendered a Salute to a patriot and classmate for all of us. A reception followed during which time I spoke with Dan's widow Joan and their daughter Kathy. Both were moved and so proud of the remembrances and greetings from his classmates.

Burial at Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis was private.

Grip hands.
