I was saddened to learn of Hans' death in Iraq -- another one of America's brightest sons and daughters killed there. I knew Hans while we served together in Kosovo in 2001-2. Hans struck me immediately with his "presence", and I later came to know him as an extremely capable and competent young Captain. He was "on his game" every day in Kosovo, and truly understood what it meant to help people in need.
