Arthur William Fridl
West Point, 1945
Be Thou At Peace
Posted by Colleen Cusumano on December 10, 2013:
Arthur William Fridl was born in Brooklyn, New York to Victoria (Fehrmann) Fridl and Harry Fridl on 2 July 1924. He often remembered fondly those days of growing up in Brooklyn with his sister, Victoria, and spending summers at Camp Chambers in Marlboro, New York.
Art was a very proud member of the United States Military Academy's Class of '45. He loved West Point dearly. He retired from the Army after 26 years. As the saying goes, you can take the man out of the Army, but not the Army out of the man. He returned to West Point often over the years and he thoroughly enjoyed seeing classmates and their wives at the reunions. Year after year, you could find Art at the Army-Navy game or watching it on TV, suffering through Army's losses or celebrating Army's wins over Navy!
Art married Julia Ross in February 1957 at West Point. They celebrated 56 years of marriage in February. Among their greatest joys were the births of their daughter, Tori (Jerry Tabin), son, Bill (Terry Toyama) and their grandchildren, Patrick and Colleen. Patrick and his wife, Kim, thrilled them with their first great-grandson, Brandon, 2 1/2 years ago, and Colleen and her husband, Steve, celebrated the birth of Liam three weeks after Art passed. There is no doubt he is watching over all of them with so much pride.
Art and Julie loved to travel the world, but they valued their family, pets, and friends above everything else. After he retired in Delaware, he could usually be found in his garden, planting or replanting bushes, but he also enjoyed painting and reading.
Art and Julie moved to northern California, near Bill, where Art spent his last seven months. He enjoyed the warmer weather and being able to sit outside with Julie, Bill, and their Yorkie, Cooper.
Art passed peacefully on 29 June 2013, three days before his 89th birthday. He is missed dearly, but it is comforting to know that he is at peace with those loved ones who passed before him.
