Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Michael W. Stevenson on January 27, 2014:

Champ's wife Pat was a cousin to my now-deceased mother-in-law and was the flower girl at her wedding in 1945. I first met them after moving to the Washington, DC area in 2003 and took an immediate liking to them both, they were the ideal couple and complemented each other in everything they did. Champ had that rare ability to set someone at ease immediately through simple courtesy and openness. He possessed such an innate dignity and charm he could command enormous respect without trying, and he was without pretense. His loss was deeply felt by my wife and I, and we still miss him. Pat is a grand lady and how she took care of him in his sickness is a model of conduct to us all. Champ never had stars during his Army career, but where he is tonight there are plenty of them. Thank you for your service, in more ways than one - and Rest in Peace.
