Be Thou At Peace

Posted by BG R.M. Ong (Ret) on May 26, 2014:

I never met Bob Brown until Yearling (sophomore) year in Camp Buckner, but we became steadfast friends afterwards. We spoke Spanish to each other because he was fluent in that language and he had a hard time understanding my Filipino accent when I spoke English.

We must have been a curious sight, to the rest of our classmates and perhaps even to the rest of the Cadets -- an American flanker and a Filipino runt walking side by side and conversing rapidly in Spanish! But we did enjoy each other's company and spent many happy times discussing how to solve the problems of the world.

I found Bob to be an extremely bright fellow, with plenty of ideas and plenty of dreams. He enjoyed the Cadet life and looked forward to an Army career. We parted ways after Graduation Day; he went to his Army and I to mine. I'm glad to find out later that he did achieve his military dream.

Vaya con Dios, amigo. Vamos a encontrarnos otra vez.
