Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Adam Nordin on May 26, 2014:

Phil,

I'm currently in Afghanistan, taking a moment of silence for those that have gone and fallen before me.

I feel very privileged to be part of such an organization comprised of such leaders, heroes, and those that are so readily willing to lay down their lives for the benefit and well-being of others.

As I reflect, your West Point Memorial is still fresh in my mind. I remember that I was permitted to notify the cadet company of you and what had happened. I remember meeting your family. What I remember most, is the Dean rendering you the final, slow salute after his final words, "we have the watch... we have the watch."

The power of that event still gives me chills. That very moment changed me, my outlook on life, and the deep understanding of the burden of my soon-to-be commission as a professional Soldier.

Though there are very few days that pass without me thinking about you, I wanted to remind you, today, on Memorial Day, that you are not forgotten. I rest well knowing that men like you are on guard, watching over me, and lighting a path when it is dark.

Rest well, Brother.

-Adam
