Bob Whitfield begun 'the Whitfield Award' probably over 40 years ago for the best squad leader in company G-3, and he and his wife Jeri came up to West Point each year to award it personally. I was the award winner in 1978. I saw them there as a Firstie, and again when I was on the Physics faculty. He was a good man, and completely dedicated to West Point. I recall inviting him to my home to dinner when I had a cadet intern at my company in Tampa Bay in recent years, the three of us spanning decades of the Long Grey Line.... gripping hands as we did of yore - Ed Dottery USMA '79 |
