Be Thou At Peace

I am very proud & privileged to be able to say that my classmate and roommate the Honorable Dr. David M Abshire is one of my oldest & very best - lifetime friends - starting almost 70 years ago at West Point. Among other wonderful things - Dave introduced me to my wife Bobby and was best man at our 9 June 1951 wedding -- which included 6 other Co M-2 classmates as swordsmen. With Dave's passing to our Long Grey Line there is only one swordsmen, Bruce Elmblad & myself remaining from that event 64 years ago. Through all the years since our wedding - Bobby & I have enjoyed a continued relationship with Dave & his terrific - true Navy Brat - wife Carolyn who actually is a Navy Super Brat with 7 Admirals in her family -- she has survived through many challenges - including her Navy Admiral Father being killed near the end of WWII, the tragic loss of her son-in-law in a honeymoon accident - & now the loss of her dear companion & husband Dave! However - Carolyn has a wonderful family & many, many friends to enjoy & to be thankful for - and like Bobby & I - the irreplaceable memories from knowing & associating with one of the truly outstanding persons of our time - one who advised Presidents & who has sponsored & supported so many creative & helpful things - a true contributor to our generation - The Honorable Dr. David M Abshire is going to be terribly missed & never forgotten as he takes his place of honor in the Long Grey Line - "Good by Dave - my wonderful friend - you have been so great for all of us" - Your Roommate Gerry
