Be Thou At Peace

Posted by William H.Ward on January 4, 2015:

I was privileged to have then Major Britt as a History of the Military Art instructor at West Point in the 1968-69 academic year.

His class was truly inspiring and left me with impressions of the Napoleonic wars that I shall never forget. Once, he brought the class almost to tears in describing Napoleon's reaction to seeing (Gen) Lannes' leg laying on the ground. During the study of the Russian Campaign, he played for us the Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture, which certainly put the academic study in perspective. I never hear the 1812 Overture without thinking of him.

He also regaled us with unique stories, one in articular about his first car, an old Desoto that I particularly remember.

He was a truly unique and influential man, whose imparted gifts and influence makes those who knew him the better for the privilege.

With thanks and appreciation,

Bill Ward, USMA'69
