Bernie was my Beast platoon leader in 1972. I was always impressed that he was a man of honor, and while being strict, he never became cruel, (something that many of his classmates succumbed to the temptation of). He was a thinker, and you could see him pondering a situation, very much infused with doing the right thing, as well as the West Point thing. Our lives crossed paths several times over the ensuing years. He stayed at my family's house on the way over to, and returning from his assignment in Turkey, and I saw him later after he had left the Army and was looking for his direction.
