Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Col. Rooert H. O'Toole on October 25, 2015:

I had the privilege to serve as a Company Commander under Col Rees, in the 169th Engineer Construction Battalion, in 1966, in Viet Nam.

Col. Rees was my inspiration as an officer and leader. His cool demeanor, inspired leadership and concern for his soldiers inspired me to do my best as a Company Commander.

He always showed his trust in my ability and the capabilities of my troops.

Once, when gunfire erupted outside our perimeter, the unit Company Commanders rushed to the Battalion Headquarters to seek information. As we waited, then Lt. Col Rees, called our next higher HQ to seek info. Suddenly, a huge explosion was heard. All of us dove for the floor, under desks, etc. When I arose I saw Col Rees, sitting calmly where he had been before the explosion, still on the phone. I never forgot that moment or his calm but sure leadership, as he told us to return to our units and await his orders. We tried to never fail him.

Later, when I was given command of a Battalion, I remembered the lessons leaned from Col. Rees. His guidance allowed me to be successful as a Battalion Commander.

He was one of West Point's great products, a leader, a soldier, and a friend.

God Bless you Colonel Rees.
