Be Thou At Peace
Posted by Stan Moore on March 27, 2016:
My friend and comrade, Jean-Luc.
I met Jean-Luc in May 1979. He was a First Lieutenant and the XO of SFODA 011 in Bad Toelz, Germany. ODA11 was the only Special Forces underwater detachment in Europe, a good place for a unique guy like Jean-Luc. I was the newly arriving commander of the little detachment.
We immediately established a good working relationship. We were both USMA grad and were both renegades in the regular Army. (Look at the hair on his photo above, mine was worse.) We trained hard and played hard. The detachment had a lot of great NCOs. Spent a huge amount of time in the mountains skiing and climbing, on ranges, and diving in the lakes of southern Bavaria. Also drank a small amount of German beer. We did 2 body searches in local lakes for German law enforcement. Jean-Luc was sort of a touchstone for adventure (and trouble!) On one occasion, he put the full Colonel of our post in a fireman's carry and hauled him around the Rod and Gun club, to win a bet.
At the end of a year, Jean-Luc was promoted and took over his own detachment. I married and he was a frequent dinner guest in our apartment.
A few years later, he married Michelle. Linda was a brides maid at the wedding at Fort Bragg.
We stayed in touch and I thoroughly enjoyed his stories of Asia and Africa.
Miss you, my friend! Save me a mug of mead in Valhalla!
