Harold Dean Frear

Lieutenant Colonel Harold Dean Frear, US Army retired, age 86, passed away, Friday, May 20, 2016 at Conway Medical Center.

He was born in Beaver City, Nebraska, son of the late Donald H. Frear and Helen Esther Barngrover Frear. In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by his brother, Donald L. Frear; and his sister, Barbara Copeland.

Harold graduated from Pocatello HS in Idaho, enlisted in the US Air Force, and after 2 years attended the US Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1955, where he met his future wife, Betty R. Petch. They were married at Ft. Knox, KY prior to his assignment in Regensburg, Germany. He was later assigned to Ft Bragg, NC; Ft. Sill, OK; Ft. Bliss, TX; Redstone Arsenal, AL; and Monterey, CA. After serving in Vietnam as a sub-sector advisor in 1966 he returned to Redstone Arsenal until 1970, then attended General Staff School in Ft. Leavenworth, KS. His last assignment until his military retirement in 1973 was with the Concepts Analysis Agency in Bethesda, MD and continued as a civilian at CAA until retiring in 1988. He enjoyed retirement in Rockville, MD followed by the last 12 years in Conway, SC playing golf and enjoying neighborhood card and game nights.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Betty R. Frear; his two children, Kimberly A. Ellmore and her husband, Warren, of Oakton, VA; Daniel S. Frear and his wife, Patricia, of Round Rock, TX; his four grandchildren, Lindsay Ellmore, Justin Frear, Nicole Frear, and Travis Frear.

A memorial service with full military honors will be held at 3:00 PM Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel with Dr. J. Kirk Lawton, Jr. officiating.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

An inurnment will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
