Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Brig. Gen. RM Ong (Ret) on May 26, 2016:

I remember Bill Lutz quite well. We were in the same Platoon in 4th New Cadet Company during Beast Barracks, and he was one of the really friendly guys at the outset. We landed in different Companies after Reorganization Week, but Bill's Company (F-2) was next to mine (E-2), so we neighbors continued to see much of each other during the next 4 years. Particularly so during class hours because we were pretty much in the same academic bracket. Therefore -- more often than not -- we found each other in the same Section (classroom) in many academic subjects.

Bill was not only smart -- but also a top athlete who participated in several intercollegiate sports. His leadership potential was evident as well, because he became a Cadet Officer during our Senior Year. We then parted ways after Graduation Day to join our respective country's Armed Forces as career officers.

Bill and I were surprised to meet each other -- 25 years later -- in Korea, where I was the Military Attache at the Philippine Embassy. We quickly renewed our friendships and joined the West Point Society in Seoul and its social activities. I noted that Bill had not changed much -- he was still the same amiable raconteur as before.

Goodbye, amigo. It was good to remember you on Memorial Day 2016. Be thou at peace!
