Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Jack Schimpf on July 21, 2005:

General Westmoreland was C.O., 101st Abn Div and Ft Campbell when I was assigned there in April, 1958. At that time, I believe he was the youngest Major General in the Army. Even a Pvt/E-2 like myself at the time, could tell that this man was special and that he had great respect for all the men in his command. It was truly an honor to be his driver during a training operation at Camp Breckenridge, KY. I had to pick him up as he came off the DZ that day and take him wherever he wanted to go. At each unit he visited, he greeted every veteran of the 187th Abn RCT which he commanded in Korea, by name. I knew many of those men. They were extremely proud to be one of "Westy's" boys. I am very happy to have had this brush with greatness!
