Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Richard Raymond III USNA '54 on August 8, 2005:

"After a lapse of nearly forty years, Captain H. R. Versace, a Special Forces officer-wounded, captured, tortured, and at last executed by Viet Cong guerrillas-is to be awarded posthumously the medal of Honor, for extreme bravery in combat, exemplary leadership of his fellow-POWs, and, unwavering resistance to attempted interrogation and indoctrination by his Communist captors." - News item

Some men there are who neither bend nor break,
Who go to glory in a holy fire,
Who dare the worst, and die, for honor's sake.

(Is it so precious, then, cynics inquire,
They dash headlong to a martyr's grave?)
There was no heart to spare, nor hand to save
This "Captain Rocky", with his Green Beret,
Unflinching in his passion to inspire
Resistance, as his stern Code would desire-
Even as he was being led away
To execution, singing, loud and clear!

A model to his comrades in their chains,
Trusting in God, without a sign of fear-
When all but life is gone, Honor remains.
