Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Jack Burgess on September 14, 2016:

I transferred to Portsmouth High School from out of town, in 1954. Roger and I met in history class. We both loved history and sometimes we would walk toward our homes after school, talking history. I remember standing on the corner with him, his feet kicking stones, just scuffing as he'd do while he talked. I had never met a young person who knew more history than I did--I went on to be a history teacher. He finished second (I think) in the statewide history competition! One day in our senior year, when we were talking at the corner, he told me he was getting an appointment to West Point. After graduation, we didn't see each other. I didn't have the funds for college, so volunteered for the U.S. Army. Being a tanker in the Army myself, I'm sure Roger was an outstanding tank leader.
