Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Brig. Gen. RM Ong (Ret) on May 28, 2017:

Memorial Day, 2017 is a good tome to remember my classmate, Dick Matteson.

Dick was a quiet guy, who did not appear exceptional in any way, but one look at his collar, and the stars there told everyone that Dick ranked academically in the top 5% of our class -- meaning that he was one smart guy indeed.

I did not see him as often as I interacted with my other classmates in Company H-2 (I was in E-2), whom I knew a lot more. I seem to recall another Matteson -- his younger brother, I believe -- who was in my regular Company or in Beast Barracks. My memory is a bit dim at this point. My lack of contact with Dick is probably because he had more than his fair share of tutoring his classmates and underclassmen, and that took up a lot of his free time.

After Graduation Day, he and I went our separate ways to serve as career officers in our separate Armies. Our paths never crossed again, even after our retirements.

Goodbye, Dick! Be thou at peace. I know you served your country proudly and well. And now, my final salute!
