Derek's death came as a terrible surprise and loss to the people who were with him here in Afghanistan. Whenever I would ask soldiers in Battle Company about Derek, they showed immense respect for him, and I could tell that they loved him. Despite his bravery and reknowned concern for the people around him, Derek was always completely modest and never once complained. Derek has been a terrific friend since I met him in Georgia, and not a day will go by when I do not think about his great qualities: kind, joyous, smart, witty, and devoted to his friends and family. My heart goes out to the Hines family, as Derek was profoundly loved and will be deeply missed by many. Eric |
