Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Jack Murry on March 26, 2019:

I was honored to serve under Col Hergert during my 18 months on Okinawa during 1970 and 1971. He commanded the 30th Artillery Brigade, and they sponsored the Army Football Team in Sukiran, The Army Gunners. I saw a notice for tryouts, and I did. I made the team, being named the captain of it my second year, and Col. Hergert was instrumental in getting me transferred from the 20th MP Company to the 30th Arty. I was allowed to live in the 30th transit barracks during football seasons, and work as a security guard on one of the missle sites during the off seasons. He gave us all the best of the best. We had a fieldhouse (Stillwell Field House), a gym (Gunners Gym), a nice stadium, and the best equipment on the island. He appointed ex Syracuse assistant William T. Brooks, who replaced Adin Brown, an All American from William and Mary. Our team posted a 14-4-1 record in two seasons: and beat the Philippine Champions at Clark Field, and the Japanese Champions from Yakusoka. Col Hergert was a man's man. I was lucky to know him. This football opportunity he gave me, prepared me to later get a football scholarship to Cal Poly. I owe so much to him. God Rest His Soul. Most Respectfully, Jack Murry
