To Derek's family, I can only imagine the loss you must feeling. A lot of times there doesn't seem to be a good reason why things like this happen. What good could come from his death? I don't know ... but what I do know is that there was a lot of good that came from his life. Derek was my roommate during Beast. And when I was taking life way too seriously and couldn't find a reason to smile, Derek always found a way to make me laugh ... it was amazing. He is one of the funniest guys I know. He showed me that in times of adversity and hardship, we can still overcome and find the best in every situation ... and there are always things to laugh about and lift our spirits. I never told him this, but I was so proud to see him 4 years later become the Captain of the Army Hockey team ... but it didn't surprise me either. He was one of those guys you wanted to be around because he just made you feel better. Derek will be missed. ~ Joel |
