Be Thou At Peace
Posted by Sue Hennessey-Filburn on September 13, 2005:
It was a sad day when Steve left this world. I miss him already. It is hard to believe that two of "the biggest buffs" and my closest company mates have passed on. Steve and Bill Love were a constant pair who always seemed to make my (and others) day.
Steve was our Company Commander and the voice of reason on numerous occasions. He was able to keep us in line, while never making us mad (hard to do with a bunch of firsties returning from the club on a Thursday night). Steve brought the best out of those he was with; soldiers and friends alike. Steve especially took care of those he loved; his soldiers, friends and family. I was able to see Steve a couple days before he passed and he was apologizing to me for dozing off -- just like Steve, making those around him feel comfortable.
Steve left us too early. My heart breaks thinking of him and the family he left behind. But, I know Bill, his roommate was waiting for him at the gates of heaven to welcome him and tell him to prepare for SAMI (just like Bill). I know that Steve would laugh at him and they would go to the bar and tell old stories. The world (again) is a bit smaller for me today. We have lost a great friend, a son, a father, a leader and a brother. I miss him more than words can say. We had so many more memories to make.
Go in peace Steve. You will be with us forever; in our hearts. No worries - Teresa and the kids will always be a part of the "Buff" and "1991" family.
Go Buffs!
Love, Sue
