Be Thou At Peace

Mike and I labored together for much of our 4 years at West Point, both being members of the cross country team and the distance runners on the Indoor and Outdoor track teams. Though we spent hours each day together, we talked little with Coach Crowell hounding us from his jeep, as Mike and I tried to keep up with the faster runners on the team. Those were the days when we believed we could run forever. On some days when the coach had no specific workouts for the distance runners, Mike and I with a few others would run anywhere on the post, occasionally up the rail line from the North Athletic fields around Storm King Mountain until we got near the next town, then turn around and run back spacing our strides to the rail road ties. We all lost Mike too early. Such a sadness. Rest in peace...or maybe just one more 50 yard wind sprint. |
