Be Thou At Peace

Maj Gen Gary A. Stemley died at age 67. He was born in Elroy, Ohio, and graduated from Ansonia (Ohio) High School. He graduated from West Point, class of '57. He also graduated from the University of Kansas, petroleum management, 1960, and in 1981 the Army War College.

Gary served with the US Army in Korea, France, Germany, Turkey and Vietnam. During the Vietnam War, he was the Army's parachute resupply officer and deputy director of fuel supply for the Army and AirForce. He earned the Legion of Merit Award for his efforts in the Battle of Khe Sahn. He was responsible for coordinating daily parachute drops of ammunition and food to embattled Marines who were surrounded for a two-month period in 1968.

From 1970-1987, he served in the Army Reserves. He served as commander of the 301st Support Group and the 411th Engineer Brigade at Fort Totten, NY. During Desert Shield/Desert Storm, he served as Assistant Chief of Engineers for Mobilization, Reserve Affairs and Longistics. His last assignment was RCAS where he led a team of government employees and contractors who developed and installed the National Guard's largest computer system in the United States. General Stemley retired from the army in 1993. He was the second to last classmate to leave military service.

In civilian life, Gen Stemley was Vice-President in charge of computer systems for Merrill Lynch and Co. in New York City until 1987. He worked for SUN Microsystems as the National Sales Manager for the Army Operations from 1993 to 2001.

Gary is sorely missed by family and friends, particularly by his wife, four children and four grandchildren.

Gary was a great guy, very loving, and a wonderful sense of humor.
