My husband and I were stationed at West Point where we got to know Derek. He was a cadet in my husband's chemistry class, and we took every chance we could to go watch him play hockey. Our then 3-year-old son wanted to be him and still wears proudly his Army hockey hat signed by Derek. Now at age 7 he still remembers meeting Derek and having him over for a BBQ. As a mother and an Army wife my heart goes out to the Hines family. You raised an amazing son who will truly be missed. He was a hero then to our son and is a hero today to our country.
