Be Thou At Peace

Posted by John Scudder on October 16, 2005:

My heartfelt condolences go out to the family of Christopher Johnson on the anniversary of his death. I taught Chris PL 300 (Military Leadership) when he was a junior at West Point. He was an outstanding student - he performed magnificiently in my class and motivated all around him. He had an impact on me. Knowing I had three boys at the time (my oldest was 1st grade; my youngest born at West Point), he told me the greatest gift I could give my children was to encourage them to be Eagle Scouts. I never forgot his advice. Today, 8 years later, my oldest boy is an Eagle and my middle son is a star with 18 merit badges. Chris gave this gift to my family.
I only recently found out about Chris's death. It pained me that such a fine young man could pass on so young. However, knowing Chris and his dedication to Duty, Honor, Country, I know his spirit remains with America, West Point, and his beloved Family.
I hope and pray my three boys will grow to be like you - honest, courageous, dedicated.
God Bless you my friend.
