Butch Wilson '63 Honored At Halftime USA v New Zealand

At halftime of the Eagles-All Blacks match, Old Gray participated in a very special ceremony honoring a member of the Founding Team, Norton Bailey "Butch" Wilson, Jr., Class of 1963.

2LT Butch Wilson died on 30 March 1964, when he gave his life while trying to save the life of one of his Soldiers near Kirchgoens, West Germany, less than one year after his graduation. Butch made this selfless decision without hesitation, and in doing so, he gave his own life that another might live. For his wholly unselfish and heroic action, Butch Wilson was awarded the Soldier's Medal, the U.S. Army's highest award for valor not in combat.

Butch Wilson's sister, Mary Coyle Kidwell, and brother, Monsignor Michael Wilson, presented Butch's original Soldier's Medal to Army Rugby at the ceremony. Lieutenant General (Retired) H.R. McMaster '84, and Major General Brian Mennes, A-A?A1/288, accepted Butch's Soldier's Medal plaque on behalf of Army Rugby.

Butch Wilson's Soldiers Medal will be given a permanent home in the Anderson Rugby Complex at West Point in a ceremony on Friday, November 12th, forever preserving Butch Wilson's memory, and ensuring that Butch's true legacy of selfless service lives on forever as an example for all future generations of Army Ruggers.
