Capt. Ralph Alan Ellis, USAF, was the first graduate from the USMA Class of 1945 to die in Korea during the Korean War. The pilot of an F-80C Shooting Star, his jet crashed during a low-level combat mission on 21 July 1950. His remains could not be recovered initially. While carried in "missing in action" (MIA) status, the Air Force promoted him to the rank of Captain along with his contemporaries.
