Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Dave Westlake on November 16, 2005:

Hans Kurth: A Leader Among Leaders

The best of us are sent here by our maker to take a different path through life. They carry the noblest of banners and walk the high ground to inspire and lead us all to greater accomplishments. They are driven by altruism and optimism, and infuse the words Duty, Honor, and Country with other words like Compassion, Hope, and Integrity as they bring new life and greater opportunities to those who wouldn?t otherwise have access to such. They are loyal and dedicated, and make an indelible lifetime impression with mere moments of interaction. The best of us stand out as they stand up for those who can?t; Hans Kurth was indeed the best of us.

Hans lived every moment with passion, pursued every effort with zeal, and touched the lives of untold scores as he fulfilled his calling of soldier, liberator, and philanthropist. He embodied the unique dichotomy of a palpable Warrior Ethos?which commanded his soldiers? unwavering respect?and an unmatched civility and love for others, which made him a great role model, loyal friend, and devoted father. His ability to execute the mission made him a superior soldier, his capability to inspire others made him a great leader, and his capacity to empathize with those who suffered made him an outstanding human being?and a true hero.

While on his long journey home, Hans always shouldered more than his share of the effort and would not rest until every lesson was learned and every task was completed. Now, looking back on this remarkable?yet tragically abbreviated?trek, we long for his presence, seek his inspiration, and hope for his resolve?but know that we have all three each time we reach beyond ourselves and achieve something that leaves this world better off. Hans, well done. Be thou at peace.
