MUNSON, DELBERT E., BG, USA, (Ret.)(Age 86)

Delbert E. Munson, 86, Brigadier General, U.S. Army, Retired, died at the INOVA Fairfax Hospital on August 28, 2004, from complications associated with leukemia.

General Munson was a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, Class of 1940. Following graduation, he served with the 35th Infantry Division until 1945, witnessing the Pearl Harbor attack and later participating in combat operations on Guadalcanal and Luzon in the Pacific Theatre during World War II.

He led a paratrooper assault during the Korean War. General Munson was also a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and the U.S. Army War College.

General Munson retired from active duty in 1970 with the rank of Brigadier General after 30 years of distinguished service. Among the many military decorations bestowed on General Munson were the Distinguished Service Medal, the Silver Star, two Legions of Merit, two Bronze Stars and two Purple Hearts.

After his retirement from active duty in 1970, General Munson settled in Alexandria, Virginia and for the next 18 years worked in various property management positions, most notably at the Watergate Complex in Washington, DC from 1970 to 1973.

General Munson was the beloved husband of the late Rosa Maria (Rosita) Munson. General Munson was a member of the Silver Spring, Maryland, Seventh-day Adventist Church, and his most notable personal interests included classical music appreciation, the pursuit of fitness, Bible study, investing, corresponding with friends, home maintenance and gardening. He was an avid supporter of the musical activities of the Alexandria Symphony and the U.S. Army Band and also a Redskins fan.

General Munson is survived by one son, Frederick Robert, 46, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A burial service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery on Wednesday, October 6, 2004 at 3 p.m.
