William Shirey
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 16, at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Eugene for Maj. William Shirey of Eugene, who died Nov. 8 of prostate cancer. He was 86. Inurnment will be at Arlington National Cemetery.
He was born Aug. 18, 1923, in Keenan, W.Va., to William and Elizabeth Givens Shirey. He married Jane Dixon Cleveland on Sept. 9, 1944, in Fort Sill, Okla. She died in 1960. He later married Jean VanDell in State College, Pa.
He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1944. He was a career military officer in the U.S. Army, and served in World War II and the Korean War, where he was a prisoner of war for 27 months. He retired from the military in 1966 and worked for HRB Singer in State College.
He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Elizabeth Shirey of State College, Katharine Shirey of Olympia, and Mary Shirey of Cheshire; a son, William Shirey Jr., of Edmonds, Wash.; and four grandchildren.
Arrangements by Musgrove Family Mortuary in Eugene. Remembrances to the Prostate Cancer Foundation or a charity of choice.
