Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Samantha H Robbins on May 17, 2024:

John was the type of person you meet once-in-a-lifetime, and I was fortunate enough to call him "Pop-Pop". He was loving but stern, a life-long learner who carried wisdom from years of diverse experiences but still experienced the world with a sense of curiosity, wonder and joy. He could make conversation with anyone and make anyone feel comfortable, or uncomfortable if he chose, with his sometimes questionable jokes and convivial sense of humor. He and my grandmother, Elaine were adventurers, they traveled the world multiple times over, never completely satiated with learning or experiencing enough. He could be relied upon to always let you know the Latin root for 'said word' or make sure you were aware of the specific aircraft that might be flying overhead. He would be known to question you on certain personal information while looking down and clicking away at this Casio calculator watch, making sure he had the correct birthday, address, phone number etc. all accounted for (until he became an early adopter of the iPhone). He could then be sure to call you on the correct date and personally sing you Happy Birthday every year. We shared a connection through our love of lacrosse and skiing, some of the best days of my adolescence were spent skiing Heavenly with him. I could not be more grateful for the relationship we had and the experiences he made possible in my life. We love & miss you Pop-Pop!
