Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Dick Wallace on June 4, 2024:

Jeff's passing has caught all of us by complete surprise and we are still reeling, I think. Jeff was always the strongest and fittest of us all.

Jeff and I were Company A-2 mates for four years- served Beast detail together and roommates Firstie year. Then, as always,: energy, enthusiasm, embracing friendship. Jeff--all about Duty- loyalty to his mates.

Jeff was very self-effacing about his Army career accomplishments. For example, it was years after- recently only, that I knew he was the commander of the Patriot units that shot down Saddam's SCUDs during Desert Storm. After retirement we enjoyed the same career as law firm executive directors, a position Jeff held at his firm for many years in WV.

Two memories stand out: first, he was always at reunions- whether class or our separate company reunions of which there have been many. Jeff relished his relationships with his 'mates', eager to hear about our lives and recent events of note, always positive, always good humor, always ready to embrace (and given his strength not a necessarily pleasant experience!) That Jeff will be missed and there will be an unmistakable gap at the table at our next gathering.

The second, really overpowering all the others, and the one I believe we will all use as the compass heading for Jeff's memory- his love for Kristie. At every occasion, either in person or on the phone, his admiration for her and his gratitude for her from the moment she entered his life was profound and unmistakable. Praising her was his favorite conversation topic. I would say that their life together was the cornerstone of his life's happiest moments.

Jeff- Well Done, Friend-- We miss you. Thank you for your example.
