Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Tadahiko Ono on August 28, 2024:

David and I were in B1 our first two years, then just down the hall in the New South our last two years. When Hiro and I moved to Hawaii in 1991, David let us use one of his condos in Waikiki for the first couple of weeks. After he moved from Honolulu to Kailua, we were neighbors, as we lived in Kaneohe. We had dinners in his homes in Honolulu, Kailua and Hau'ula and he joined us at our holiday wine get togethers in Kaneohe. David was very sociable, friendly, candid and would easily and enthusiastically engage in discussions on any subject. David was not only a very intelligent and well read person but was very principled and upright. He could never have become a politician or engage in other professions where he might have to compromise his integrity. After moving to Hawaii, David decided that he wanted to be a teacher, so he went to Harvard and completed his PhD in just 21/2 yrs. The MBA class he taught was the most sought after course and was well known as a no-nonsense, most demanding class at the University of Hawaii. As others have mentioned, David was also a very generous person to the causes he believed in and our Alma Mater will be a better institution for his very generous gift. He also gave generous gifts to other causes he believed in and supported locally in Hawaii. In his last years, David became increasingly challenged in his mobility to the point he either had to stay in bed or be confined to a wheel chair. He also noticed that he was slipping in other ways. For a man who was always active both mentally and physically, life became intolerable, even with the dedicated, unselfish and loving support of his wife Sandy, whom David loved and cherished. David wrote a long email to his friends and former colleagues to bid farewell and to explain his decision to go to Zurich-a most difficult and courageous decision. Knowing David, we understood and support his decision. What a life well lived-very well done, David!
