George Joseph Woods, Jr., devoted husband, beloved father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle, combat veteran, aviator, and retired Army officer died May 21, 2022, at Bethany Village, Mechanicsburg, PA. May 21st served as a fitting day for his passing. It was both Armed Forces Day and Graduation Day for West Points Class of 2022.
Born to George and Rose (Ault) Woods, George entered the world August 14, 1931, in his hometown of Philadelphia, PA. He attended Saint Benedicts Elementary School and La Salle College High School before going on to graduate from the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY in 1956. During his 27-year distinguished military career George faithfully served his nation in a variety of locations around the world with Barbara and his children at his side (most of the time). Fort Dix, NJ, the next assignment in his career, included an assignment to the 3d Basic Combat Training Brigade as executive officer followed by command of its 3d Battalion.
He then served as Army Attach, US Embassy, Islamabad, Pakistan from 1977-1979, continuing as the Interim Defense Attach following the November 21, 1979, attack and burning of the US embassy- a dark day for which he was recognized for his valor by the US Ambassador to Pakistan. For his final assignment, he served as the Chief, Aviation Division, 1st Army at Fort Meade, MD from which he retired in 1983.
Originally an Infantry Officer, George eventually became an Aviation Officer, flying multiple airframes during his career including the Otter, Beaver, and the Beechcraft Army C-12. A dedicated Army football fan, he was also a dedicated hometown fan of his beloved Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies.
