Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Doug Warden on September 3, 2024:

Bob Radcliffe became a part of my life in May 1967 when he became my platoon leader in Vietnam. A day or two after, he asked me to be his radio-telephone-operator. For the next four months, I was never over a step away from him. On May 31, 1967, I went into a bunker complex with him armed with a shirt full of grenades because he wanted to somehow stem the withering fire aimed at our platoon. The 27 soldiers in our platoon were surrounded by an estimated 200 enemy. I witnessed first-hand the incredible bravery he showed that day. For over 57 years he has been my friend, my mentor, my fishing buddy, my traveling companion and my biggest fan. He and Faye were so hospitable to me and my late wife through the years. He made everyone feel special. There will never be another like him. You are missed, old friend.
