I only have vague memories about our West Point years, but I well recall Dave Bangert with his keen intellect and easy going mannerisms. We were in Company B-1 together in Plebe and Yearling years. In particular, I remember that Dave seldom had to study mathematics as did the rest of us. Being such a natural and gifted mathematician, Dave would anticipate and understand the math lesson for the upcoming day based solely on his class participation on the day before. Since we had math several days a week, this provided Dave with considerable additional time. But Dave did not idle away this gift of time, rather he spent it tutoring his classmates in the subject. I can still picture Dave late at night sitting on the floor under the hallway lights helping his fellow classmates prepare for math class. Yes, Dave was very smart, but more importantly, he was a kind and considerate human being. Now Dave can rest after a job well done.
