Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Carl Grasso on November 23, 2024:

I was a young Second Lieutenant when I went to work for Mel Remus, when he was commander of the 84th Engineer Battalion and I was made the Headquarters Company Commander (we were short on captains!). I didn't know a lot, and Col. Remus knew it, but he also knew that with his help I couldn't do too much damage! And somehow we and the battalion survived, including a move of the battalion from Quy Nhon over 200 miles north to Da Nang. After we moved, we had an influx of captains, and Col. Remus told me he had to relieve me, but gave me my pick of slots for the remainder of my tour (closely coincided with his tour); I chose a troop leading slot, platoon leader in C Company. A come down, true, but Col. Remus made it as painless and honorable as possible. I will always appreciate his understanding and kindness, as well as his keeping me on the straight-and-narrow -- at least as much as humanly possible! I will sorely miss him.
