Be Thou At Peace
Posted by Bill Bahr, USMA '69 on February 16, 2025:
Although we were both in the First Regiment, I knew very little of Denny Helsel until he volunteered to become Chair of our 55th Reunion Committee. In preparation for the Reunion via Zoom meetings, one always could count on Denny to be the gracious servant leader, always praising his committee members and asking how he could help. Then, at one meeting, we learned that he was having serious health problems. Then we saw him continue with the heavy responsibilities of reunion leadership, working hard, long, and effectively at the Reunion itself, earning profuse thanks from all for a job very well done. Afterwards, I and I presume many others sent him notes of thanks along with occasional morale checks. He was always cheerful and grateful in his responses. Sadly, we then heard he had passed. We've lost a good one!
From the "Howitzer" -- 1969
DENNIS ELVIN HELSEL, Bellwood, Pennsylvania, B-1 Den, as we all like to call him, is a very friendly and active member of our class. His constant desire to participate in sports and extracurricular activities take some of his time away from his academics. However, his grades have always been sky high and he has been continuously on the Dean's List. During mid-period he has never failed to visit the hostess' office. Den drags "Pro" every weekend, but for him, there is no substitute for a certain Tyrone girl.
