Lt. Col. (Ret) Robert Eugene Knapp, Jr., 82, of Pinehurst, passed at his home, surrounded by his family, on Saturday, February 1, 2025.
Born in Macon, GA, Dec. 23, 1942, he was the son of the late Robert Eugene and Frances Williams Knapp. Robert grew up in Syracuse, NY and after his high school graduation, enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was accepted into The Military Academy at West Point, graduating as part of the class of 1967. Robert served in Vietnam with the 9th Infantry Division as an airborne ranger and was awarded two Silver Stars, four Bronze Stars with V device and two Purple Hearts. He was a company commander and served under Col. David Hackworth. Robert's military career brought him back to West Point where he taught Leadership and also served as the school's 150LB football team head coach. He was stationed in Hawaii, Germany and Colorado Springs where he was the Professor of Military Science at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. After Robert's retirement from active duty, and subsequent career in the Civilian Construction Market, he settled in Pinehurst in 2008.
Robert was the loving husband of Arlene "Leney" Knapp. He was the father of Kimberly Knapp and Robert Eugene Knapp III, wife Jacqueline. He was the grandfather of Cameron Allman and Ashtyn Gault and a great grandfather of three. He was the brother of David Turner Knapp and Elizabeth Blair Bechdol (Patrick). Robert is also survived by his brother -- in -- law John Kirschenheiter (Cathy) and the late Frederick Kirschenheiter (Sue Ellen) and many nieces and nephews.
