Be Thou At Peace
Posted by Adam Nordin on May 26, 2025:
Phil.
I'm realizing it's been 20 years since I last saw you. You likely graduated this week, actually. Though I sadly can't pinpoint our last memory, I have many to remember you by.
This year my class officially enters into the Army's executive work force as battalion commanders. I've had much time to reflect in the last year, and I think of you often. You are calm, compassionate, giving, and curious. You had a strong devotion to others - selfless in every sense of the word. I was always inspired by those qualities, and I remember them vividly- sort of like a feeling or an expression than something tangible.
This year I've seen a lot of news about how so few Americans know somebody who has served, let alone perished in combat. It's a testament to the modest stability we've enjoyed despite 2 decades in the Middle East. I'm grateful so few truly know the absolute suddenness of the loss of a friend in defense of his or her country. Sadly this is not the case around the world, but for America it is.
Phil. You are missed, brother. I promise to honor yours, and so many others', memories and sacrifice, particularly in these coming years as I attempt to transform kids into Soldiers. Sadly, we can only be here today because people like you came before us. Our duty to strive to honor you pales in comparison to your service to us.
Until we meet again, Phil. -Adam
