Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Flint Whitlock on June 18, 2025:

Very sorry to learn that he died 11 years ago. Steve and I worked together in the Plans and Projects department of the Directorate of Supply at USARV HQ (Long Binh Post) in 1968. I remember him as a serious, hard-working captain who had a sense of humor. One day we decided to play a prank on Major Pace, who was in our office. Maj. Pace always got upset when he read the daily SITREP that indicated Viet Cong activity near Long Binh, so we wrote up a fake SITREP that indicated the VC were going to attack us in a day or two. He got so upset that he went running to the general who commanded our section; Steve and I had to go to the general to explain it was all a prank. Instead of giving us a chewing-out, the general just laughed and told us not to do it again.

I also remember that as our tours of duty in Vietnam were coming to an end, he requested Fort Carson, CO (because he liked to hunt and fish) and I requested Fort Sheridan, in Chicago, because that's where I was from. Naturally, I got Fort Carson and he got Fort Sheridan (as I recall). He was not happy.

I later used Steve as a character (under the name Todd Gorman) on my novel, "Internal Conflicts."
