I was one of John's room mates during our initial year at West Point. Found in Russian at the end of that first year my time with the class was short. He was, as a number of you have commented, a brilliant cadet! But more than that I remember his kindness. He would finish his Russian studies and immediately turn to me and ask if he could help... John never needed my request, he was always the leader. In 1971, somewhere in Germany, a car passed me on the autobahn and I immediately recognized the driver from all those formations.
