I was a class of 1969 plebe on the top floor of one of the Lost 50s; Mr. McElroy was a yearling down the hall. His room of yearlings treated our plebe room with caring oversight and even occasional kindness leaving me and my classmates with an abiding love of 1968. During the annual civilian clothing sale in Arvin Gym I bought a very severe black suit and black shoes. Mr McElroy saw this and encouraged me to break out of my dismal style on the next purchase and especially to buy some suitable brogues (Louisiana for shoes) that reflected better our youth. After recognition he became Howie to our class and remained a witty, friendly and helpful friend. Rest in peace Howie and thanks for the clothing advice. Hop Bailey E-4 1969 |
