Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Barbara S Laswell on October 10, 2025:

Bruce Hartig Laswell, of Naples, Florida, and Fox Chapel, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on September 5, 2025. Born on January 1,1947, he spent his childhood in Noblesville, Indiana, playing golf, basketball, trumpet in the band, and rising to Eagle Scout.
Bruce graduated fourth in his class from the United States Military Academy West Point, New York, in 1969. An Airborne Ranger, he served in the Army Corps of Engineers in Vietnam in 1970-71 as a Company Commander and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. After returning from Vietnam, Bruce received his Masters in Engineering from Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, where he met and married his wife Barbara Stuart in 1973. They returned to West Point from 1974-77 where Bruce served as Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanics, conducted research on holographic imaging, and served as the Officer Representative for the West Point golf team. During this time he also earned an M.B.A. from Long Island University. After teaching at West Point he spent a year at Lawrence Livermore Labs in California conducting research in oil shale environmental impact. In 1978 Bruce was honorably discharged with the rank of Major.
Bruce and Barbara spent the next 40 years in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Bruce began his professional career as the founder of SRW, an environmental engineering consulting firm and went on to join forces with other firms including ICF Kaiser, Sevenson, and Greenhorne & O'Mara.
An avid golfer, skier, basketball player, mushroom forager, and life-long angler, he enjoyed being outdoors and with people. Longue Vue Club in Pittsburgh and Wilderness Country Club in Naples were special places for him. He loved music, jazz and was reliably the first on any dance floor with his signature jitterbug and funky chicken. Bruce also relished his Porsches and volunteering at the Revs Institute in Naples.
