Howard Charles Smith

West Point, 1972

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Stephen J. Marshman on February 1, 2026:

Howard and I grew up together in New Hartford, New York. I first met Howard through our mutual interest in the Cross Country and Swimming Teams. We were friendly competitors in sports, good friends and better teammates. His Mom worked in the high school office and kept an eye on both of us...so how could we do otherwise? I graduated high school in 1967, joined West Point Class of 1971 and ended up in H4. I knew Howard planned to follow me in 1968 but was astonished to learn he had been assigned to H4! This allowed us to continue our friendship and visit home more often, as our dads could take turns hauling us back and forth. After graduation, I sailed off into the Army for the next many years. We only crossed paths a couple times in the years before word of his passing reached me. Howard C. Smith was a first-class human being and my good friend. I miss him.
