Frederick Whiting Timmerman (Tim), a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed from our earth on 28 December, 2025, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Tim was a force of nature, natural leader, and a principled man with deep faith and kindness. Tim was a man of deep talent with many passions and pursuits. He graduated from The United States Military Academy (West Point) in 1965 which began an honorable and storied 25 year carrier as an Army Armor Officer. His career included a year long tour in Vietnam where he earned the Bronze Star with Valor, the Bronze Star, and the Army Air Medal. Tim would go on to serve in critical Command and Staff roles including Senior Staff Officer and Speechwriter to the United States Army Europe Commander and 6-32 Armor "Thunderbolts" Battalion Commander in Fort Carson, Colorado. In addition, Tim graduated from the Army War College in Carlisle, PA, and he served as the Editor in Chief of Military Review Magazine, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He retired as a full Army Colonel in 1989. His dedicated service included an unwavering respect for the education of young people. Tim was a full time Graduate Student at Duke University where he earned Master's degree in 1972 and his PHD in 1974, Tim then returned to West Point where he thrived pursuing one of his many passions- teaching, leading, and shaping the lives of young men. He would later teach at the Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and, after retirement, he was a Professor in the Business School at Queen's University in Charlotte, North Carolina. Always a leader and friend in his community and neighborhood, Tim's volunteer service extended well beyond his military service. Tim ran polling stations during multiple elections as a Precinct Judge. He led multiple Homeowners associations in his neighborhoods where he lived. Tim also founded the South Mecklenburg Alliance for Responsible Taxpayers (SMART) in Charlotte, NC. Even his friendships among the dog owners of his neighborhood brought him joy and kinship with a wonderful group dog owners and neighbors. Tim is survived by his loving wife, Susan and their three adult children: Eric (wife Leigh), Erin (husband Michael), and Tracey (husband Jeff). He will be deeply missed by his eight grandchildren, who affectionately called him Poppop. Tim's legacy and memory will live on through his family, whose lives were forever enriched by his personal example of service and unwavering love and support. Tim's Celebration of Life will be at Cedarwood County Club in Charlotte on 30 January, 2026. His memorial Mass (Most Holy Trinity Chapel) and internment will be at West Point, NY, 19 March, 2026. Mass to begin at 1330 hours.
