Be Thou At Peace

Posted by John Austin Bell on March 22, 2026:

Bob was one of the finest people anyone could meet.
He was a roommate. I would taunt him about working and studying so hard whether it be academics or SCUSA while I read James Bond books. He just laughed me off and rightfully so as his many achievements have proved. Bob's many accomplishments included his SCUSA contributions, Head of the History Dept. at West Point, author of important books and perhaps most important maintaining impeccable character. He also had a great sense of humour. We were on the G-1 intramural golf team and neither one of us had ever played golf before. Both our performances demonstrated this. Over the years, whenever we talked, we always got a good chuckle out of that experience. Several years ago, I was reading a national publication; not sure which, possibly Newsweek, Time or another and there was a book being given good reviews that was written by my former roomie ( possibly "Pyrrhic Victory: French Strategy and......). I immediately called him and offered congratulations. He had many books published. One of my favorites was "Strength and Drive...." about our class. We kept occasional contact over the years. The last time I spoke with Bob was a few years ago and I asked him what he was up to. He stated something like... "not much, just enjoying life in his condominium on the Gulf as much as he and Diane could". Bob will be greatly missed.
